Lot 8

Pair late 18th century Chinese export armorial bowls painted with lion crest and 'JAC' monogram within green and gilt bands, 10.7cm diameter.See Howard page 709. This service was made for Captain John Goodall Canning (1756 - 1804), an East India Company Captain who was Captain of the Nonesuch sailing between Calcutta and Canton. In 1790 he ordered the service with the intention of sailing to England to marry Anne, who lived near Bristol but sadly all leave was cancelled due to the danger of War. He, in the meantime, held the post of Deputy Master Attendant in the East India Company until 1804, when he eventually sailed for England only to die on route on March 27th 1804 and was buried at sea. The service passed to his sister who married John Bawtree, a brewer of Wivenhoe and thence descended to Dame Catherine Hunt (1854 - 1948), a former Mayor of Colchester (1924 - 1925)
