Fine quality Victorian ladies brass bound Coromandel dressing case by Jenner & Knewstub

Fine quality Victorian ladies brass bound Coromandel dressing-case by Jenner & Knewstub, 33 St James St, London, with hinged cover, containing a silver mounted mirror and wallet, opening to reveal an upper tray containing a silver mounted combined vinaigrette and perfume bottle, and thirteen hallmarked silver topped, cut glass bottles and jars (predominately London 1889), various makers over-stamped Frederick Jenner and Fabian Knewstub and all with engraved squirrel and peacock crests and motto “Ne Tentis Aut Perfice”, over a monogram H.F.P. The fall front containing an extensive fitted set of manicure, sewing and other items (21 items plus 3 missing). The fall front also reveals two concealed drawers, one containing an ivory mounted brush set, with matching crests and monogram, and the other, a jewellery drawer, with an ivory letter opener, a pair of ivory glove stretchers and a packet of three French horsehair hairnets. The dressing case is contained in its original leather travelling case embossed with initials HFP. 40cm across. Dressing case key lacking.

Condition Report

General overall condition of box is very good, some surface marks and scratching to woodwork commensurate with age and use, border veneers have some tiny cracks, brass work is marked in places and lacquering worn, front external lower brass inlay is loose but in place, lower drawer does not fasten correctly.

Silver is in very good condition, some minor surface wear and scratching, top left toilet jar cover has a small dent, all four small circular covers have a small ding to the rims in approximately the same place on each one, all other silver covers are undamaged. Mirror is in good condition. Hallmarks are good. Silver items in tray are in good condition. Silver plated items have minor surface marking in places.

Glassware is generally good with traces of residue from previous contents, one of the larger rectangular glass boxes has a chip to one corner of the rim and top of one screw top jar is also chipped, otherwise no other damage or cracks. Photographs to follow.

Outer leather case is in generally good condition, some minor wear and scuffing.

Absentee Bidding

For clients unable or not wishing to attend our sale we are happy to accept absentee bids. Absentee bids can either be left in person with our office team, phoned or emailed to us. We simply require lot numbers and descriptions and the maximum bid which you wish to leave. Absentee bids are then transferred to our auction pages and the auctioneer will bid on your behalf. If the lot can be purchased at a lower price than your maximum bid our auctioneers will always endeavour to work in your interest to purchase the lot for you as cheaply as other bids will allow. If the same bid is left by two people on a lot we will precedence to the bidder who leaves the bid first. 

We are happy to provide condition reports for online and absentee bidders and to supply additional photographs on any lot. We ask that condition report requests are submitted at least 24 hours prior to the sale. (Whilst every care is taken to give an accurate condition report, we accept no responsibility for any omissions or errors in our reports. It is the buyer’s responsibility to view the lots and satisfy themselves as to their condition.)

 

Telephone Bidding

We are happy to accept phone bids for our Fine Art and Collectors’ sales. Phone bids may be arranged in person with our office team, by phone or by email. We simply require the lot number and details of the lots which you wish to bid on and contact phone number / numbers. Our phone bidders will call in advance of your chosen lot / lots and bid on your behalf during the sale.
Telephone bids must be booked by 4pm the day before the sale but can be arranged earlier, we have limited lines and certain lots can be over-subscribed for phone bidding, in such instances we conduct a first come, first served basis and we encourage clients to book well in advance or risk being disappointed.

Storage charges:- Please note that all lots of furniture, garden statues and rugs will only be available for collection strictly by appointment at our premises until 12pm Friday 6th May.  After which all items of furniture will be collected by R & D Schofield Removals at a cost of  £10 + vat per lot and £1 per day storage thereafter
