Fine Victorian and later medal group comprising Companion of the Bath (C.B.), Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.), Member of The Royal Victorian Order (M.V.O.), Egypt medal 1882 - 1889 with Suakin 1885 clasp named to Lieut. J. F. Erskine. 2nd / Scots Gds., Queen’s South Africa medal with four clasps comprising Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902 named to Major. J. F. Erskine. Scots Gds., 1914 - 15 Star named to Brig. Gen. J. F. Erskine M.V.O., War and Victory medals named to Brig. Gen. J. F. Erskine, Victorian Golden Jubilee (1887) medal named to Capt. J. F. Erskine and Khedive’s Star 1884 - 1886, court mounted in period fitted box, C.B. also retaining its original box of issue.

Together with a fascinating collection of related ephemera to include 2nd Batt. Scots Guards Soudan Campaign 1885 diary, a fine portrait miniature on ivory of J. F. Erskine dated 1898 in fitted box, APHA Ref: B5SMSKNC, a typed account of his service during the First World War, detailed typed record of service, awards, commendations, press cuttings and photographs of the General throughout his illustrious career.

N.B. Brigadier General J. F. Erskine, C.B., C.M.G., M.V.O. (1862 - 1936) was a decorated army officer and son of Captain Sir Henry David Erskine of Cardross K.C.V.O., J.P. D.L. (See also lots(s) 44 and 45). He was born on 4th June 1862 and went on to have a long career military career, initially with the West Yorkshire Regiment and the Dorsetshire Regiment before joining the Scots Guards, where he saw service in Egypt. He was present during the engagements of Hasheen and Tomai. In South Africa during the Boer War he took part in operations in Transvaal and the Orange River Colony.

In the First World War he served in Gallipoli, commanding the South Scottish Infantry Brigade from mid-1915 and was present during attacks on the Turkish Trenches on 12th and 13th July. He went on to command the 26th Infantry Brigade and held Trenches at the extreme left of the British line at Helles and was present at the evacuation from Sulva when in command of the 34th Infantry Brigade. Finally, he was in command of the 33rd Infantry Brigade in the Defence of the Suez Canal.

Following his service in the Gallipoli campaign, he served in France again, commanding the 33rd Infantry Brigade and was present at the capture of trenches South East of Thiepval in September 1916. We was Mentioned in Despatches on three occasions and was awarded the C.M.G. (London Gazette February 1916) and C.B. (London Gazette June 1917).

Absentee Bidding

For clients unable or not wishing to attend our sale we are happy to accept absentee bids. Absentee bids can either be left in person with our office team, phoned or emailed to us. We simply require lot numbers and descriptions and the maximum bid which you wish to leave. Absentee bids are then transferred to our auction pages and the auctioneer will bid on your behalf. If the lot can be purchased at a lower price than your maximum bid our auctioneers will always endeavour to work in your interest to purchase the lot for you as cheaply as other bids will allow. If the same bid is left by two people on a lot we will precedence to the bidder who leaves the bid first. 

We are happy to provide condition reports for online and absentee bidders and to supply additional photographs on any lot. We ask that condition report requests are submitted at least 24 hours prior to the sale. (Whilst every care is taken to give an accurate condition report, we accept no responsibility for any omissions or errors in our reports. It is the buyer’s responsibility to view the lots and satisfy themselves as to their condition.)

 

Telephone Bidding

We are happy to accept phone bids for our Fine Art and Collectors’ sales. Phone bids may be arranged in person with our office team, by phone or by email. We simply require the lot number and details of the lots which you wish to bid on and contact phone number / numbers. Our phone bidders will call in advance of your chosen lot / lots and bid on your behalf during the sale.
Telephone bids must be booked by 4pm the day before the sale but can be arranged earlier, we have limited lines and certain lots can be over-subscribed for phone bidding, in such instances we conduct a first come, first served basis and we encourage clients to book well in advance or risk being disappointed.
