East Anglian Art

We are leading specialists in East Anglian Art and hold bi-annual dedicated East Anglian Art auctions in Spring and Autumn.

East Anglia is a Region synonymous with painting and sculpture with a distinct lineage stretching back to Gainsborough and Constable, Cotman and Crome. Not only has our Region been a hotbed for homegrown talent such as Munnings, Seago and Frink; artists have also long been drawn here to paint the particular light and lofty skies. Throughout the 20th Century through to modern day there have been groups and clusters of artists gravitating to specific areas in the Region such as the Benton End School and The Bardfield Group, many of these artists chose Colchester as a central hub for the exhibition of works and the exchange of ideas, our auctions echo this tradition.

Our regular East Anglian sales form part of our regular Fine Art auctions when twice a year the picture element of the sale is comprised solely of East Anglian art and sculpture. The wealth of artistic endeavour in our Region and our reputation as the go-to auction house for those wishing to sell East Anglian art means there is no shortage of works,  with sales often in excess of 300 lots and with a spectrum of styles and prices to suit all tastes and pockets.

The department is overseen by picture specialists Jonathan Benson and Daniel Wright who both have a wealth of knowledge and experience in this area, their expertise has been fundamental to our growing reputation for selling artists’ estates. In the last three years we have orchestrated the sale of the Peter Coker Estat3, the Glyn Morgan Estate and residual works from the Cedric Morris Estate. As well as those estates which require a quick conclusion, we have connections with a number of artists’ estates for whom we act in a more measured approach offering small groups of works in a number of sales over a long period of time.

We are justly proud of our well established East Anglian Art sales which have resulted in numerous world record prices set for artists including Denis Wirth-Miller and Lucy Harwood and various others. If you are an interested collector or seller of works our East Anglian Art department will be able to assist.
