Oriental

Oriental art and antiques feature in the majority of our sales but significant pieces are often showcased in our bi-monthly Fine Art sales. Specialists James Grinter and Tom Flatt have particular knowledge in the field and we regularly handle significant collections of Oriental porcelain, sculpture and paintings. It is well known that the market for Oriental works of art has seen seismic growth in recent decades and we are particularly alive to the possibility of uncovering previously unidentified works of significant historic and monetary value which can turn up in the most unlikely of places. Recent discoveries include a Chinese Ming period cinnabar lacquer box, which although severely damaged, climbed to £95,000 in 2021, a jade dish which sold for £20,000 in 2023 and a very early Chinese blue and white porcelain bowl, which, when our valuer identified it, was being used as dog bowl! The owners (and presumably, their dog) were amazed when the bowl sold for £90,000.
