Grayson Perry (b. 1960)

Nationality: British

Grayson Perry was born in Chelmsford and studied art at Portsmouth College of Art and Design. He held break-through exhibitions in 2002, preempting the 2003 Turner prize win which brought him to the attention of the general public.

His work challenges the historic hierarchical divisions between art and craft in Western culture. Coil pots and textiles are his canvas which he uses to explore biographical detail and to raise fundamental questions, drawing on art and craft traditions and iconography. Grayson Perry has also become a leading commentator and lecturer on art and related topics, has published books and presented television and radio series. In 2015 he completed the controversial ‘Julie’s House’ at Wrabness, an exhibition of textiles, prints and artefacts inspired by the project was Exhibited at Firstsite, Colchester in 2018.

At auction prices reflect Grayson Perry’s status as one of our country’s best known and loved artists, a true innovator, with record prices for ceramic vessels now exceeding £100,000.
