Major-General The Honourable Earl of Athlone and H.R.H. Princess Alice Countess of Athlone -The Wartime Governor General of Canada - a unique and important archive of ephemera contained in eight scrap albums of the Governor Generals time in Canada from 1940 to 1946 - collated in time order by Mr Ernest Bennett The Athlone’s Butler - including signed photograph of the Athlones and Mr Mackenzie King and Mr Daudrand on their official welcome to Canada dated June 21st 1940, The Governor Generals train, visits to all parts of Canada, Government House and staff, including interior views, signed photographs of H.R.H. The Duke of Kent on 30th July 1941, meeting native Americans and the Earl being proclaimed Chief Rainbow and signing the photograph as such, Winston Churchills visit to Ottawa December 21st 1941, Crown Prince and Princess of Norway visit and signed photograph January 16th 1942, the opening of Parliament January 22nd 1942, visits by The King of The Hellenes, The King of Yugoslavia, The Queen of the Netherlands, Antony Eden (including original dinner invitations), Big Game hunting in the Rockies September 1943 including many informal photos of the Athlones, visit of MME. Chiangmai Kai-Shek 1943, The Athlones skiing, visit of The Governor General to Washington March 22nd-24th 1945 including programme and menu and place card for the White House Correspondants’ Association Annual Dinner march 22nd 1945 including a detailed account by Bennett of the visit, visit of General De Gaulle August 28th 1945, Staff at Goverment House in full dress uniforms 1946, original handwritten telegrams from The Earl thanking the Canadian Prime Minister for his splendid leaving arrangements and how sad they are for leaving Canada, visit to America and holiday in Trinidad followed by cruise home on The Queen Mary from New York to Southampton - sale particulars of Brantridge Park the Athlone’s country seat - an important historical record (8) sold together with letters to Mr Bennett from Lord Athlone and Princess Alice during and after his service, Mr Bennetts Daily Journals from 1937 to 1948 detailing his daily working routine, Mr Bennetts Visitors book signed by H.M. Queen Mary, The Athlones and other notables and Canada related items.

Absentee Bidding

For clients unable or not wishing to attend our sale we are happy to accept absentee bids. Absentee bids can either be left in person with our office team, phoned or emailed to us. We simply require lot numbers and descriptions and the maximum bid which you wish to leave. Absentee bids are then transferred to our auction pages and the auctioneer will bid on your behalf. If the lot can be purchased at a lower price than your maximum bid our auctioneers will always endeavour to work in your interest to purchase the lot for you as cheaply as other bids will allow. If the same bid is left by two people on a lot we will precedence to the bidder who leaves the bid first. 

We are happy to provide condition reports for online and absentee bidders and to supply additional photographs on any lot. We ask that condition report requests are submitted at least 24 hours prior to the sale. (Whilst every care is taken to give an accurate condition report, we accept no responsibility for any omissions or errors in our reports. It is the buyer’s responsibility to view the lots and satisfy themselves as to their condition.)

 

Telephone Bidding

We are happy to accept phone bids for our Fine Art and Collectors’ sales. Phone bids may be arranged in person with our office team, by phone or by email. We simply require the lot number and details of the lots which you wish to bid on and contact phone number / numbers. Our phone bidders will call in advance of your chosen lot / lots and bid on your behalf during the sale.
Telephone bids must be booked by 4pm the day before the sale but can be arranged earlier, we have limited lines and certain lots can be over-subscribed for phone bidding, in such instances we conduct a first come, first served basis and we encourage clients to book well in advance or risk being disappointed.

Please note that the sale of the items listed does not amount to an assignment of or licence to the purchaser of the copyright in that item.  No rights of reproduction in whole or in part are guaranteed by any sale unless specifically noted in the catalogue description.

It can be assumed that most post 1960 Royal signatures on greeting cards and other documents are probably by autopen and it is up to the purchaser to satisfy themselves as to whether this is the case before the sale.

Storage charges:- Please note that all lots of furniture, garden statues and rugs will only be available for collection at our premises until 12pm on Tuesday 26th November.  After which all items of furniture will be collected by R & D Schofield Removals at a cost of per lot of £10 + vat and £1 per day storage thereafter
