Lotus Esprit S1

Lotus Esprit S1

A rare 1970’s supercar immortalised in one of the most iconic film franchises in history is heading for auction in Colchester.

25/05/2023

The Lotus Esprit was launched in 1976, turning heads like nothing else before it. Gone were the flowing lines of the 50’s and 60’s Lotus cars and in were the sharp lines penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign, making the car the most exotic looking thing ever to have emerged from Norfolk!

The earliest Esprit’s, the S1’s, produced between 1976 and 1978 are marked out by their gleaming Wolfrace Slot Mag alloy wheels and bold tartan interiors. They also famously turned the head of James Bond Producer Cubby Broccoli, who selected the Esprit as the new wheels for James Bond. The cars went on to star in two Bond films with a white S1 Esprit most famously in The Spy Who Loved Me.

After over a decade in an Essex barn, VJM 900S a March 1978 registered example, in the iconic colours of The Spy Who Loved Me car, emerged back into the light in May 2023. This very complete S1 Esprit, believed to be one of only around 50 S1 Esprit’s left in the UK will be going under the hammer on Friday 30th June, in our next Classic car and vehicle sale.
