Petrus de Crescentiis Ruralia commoda, first edition of the first printed book on agriculture, Augsburg, Johann Schuessler, 1471.
Crescentiis, Petrus - Commodorum Ruralium, Augsburg, Johann Schuessler, 1471, the first edition of the first printed book on agriculture. Chancery folio, mid-19th century crushed green morocco and gilt binding, signed E Niedree 1845 to turn in. The text is complete, the three blanks are lacking.
Provenance: From the collection of Professor Robert ("Bobby") Boutflour, CBE (1890-1961). Gifted to him by B.O.C.M. (British Oil and Cake Mills) then by family descent. In his 1965 biography 'Bobby Boutflour' by his wife Mary Boutflour, it states: 'His two great hobbies were collecting old books on agriculture and, of course, shooting. Now a well-paid principal, he was able to indulge in purchasing books more freely, but he never paid very large sums. Bought at a moderate price, they increased in value. One book by J.S., 1545, he has marked, "very rare, perhaps the only one in existence". His most valuable book was a first edition of Petrus Crescentius printed in Germany in 1471, the printing, illuminations and paper being in excellent condition. This was a presentation from the B.O.C.M. So also was the delightful little volume of Fitzherbert (lot 687)' it seems like a very generous gift but as stated elsewhere in his biography: '...Ralph Sadler in proposing a vote of thanks to him in Harrowgate said 'Sir, you have put thousands of pounds into the pockets of dairy farmers. God knows how many millions you must have put into the pocket of B.O.C.M.' After his appointment as Principal of the Royal Agricultural College Cirencester in 1931 Professor Boutflour was largely responsible for raising the prestige of the College to its present high standards. He directed a radical remodeling of the University, expanding the student numbers from 50 to 800 during his tenure. He published significant works, particularly relating to dairy farming, and played an important role in the growth of international farming yields in the austere post-war period. It was said of Boutflour, on his death in 1961, that he was "... the most capable, colourful and forceful character that ever adorned the fields of agriculture".

Condition Report
Single worm hole to approximately the last 24 leaves. Upper joint worn, tear to pp67 and 186 not affecting text, insert patch repair to one leaf top corner, also repair to a small tear top of page (see images) elsewhere there are a couple of slight tears including one to first text page. Some various time stains

Absentee Bidding
For clients unable or not wishing to attend our sale we are happy to accept absentee bids. Absentee bids can either be left in person with our office team, phoned or emailed to us. We simply require lot numbers and descriptions and the maximum bid which you wish to leave. Absentee bids are then transferred to our auction pages and the auctioneer will bid on your behalf. If the lot can be purchased at a lower price than your maximum bid our auctioneers will always endeavour to work in your interest to purchase the lot for you as cheaply as other bids will allow. If the same bid is left by two people on a lot we will precedence to the bidder who leaves the bid first.
We are happy to provide condition reports for online and absentee bidders and to supply additional photographs on any lot. We ask that condition report requests are submitted at least 24 hours prior to the sale. (Whilst every care is taken to give an accurate condition report, we accept no responsibility for any omissions or errors in our reports. It is the buyer’s responsibility to view the lots and satisfy themselves as to their condition.)
Telephone Bidding
We are happy to accept phone bids for our Fine Art and Collectors’ sales. Phone bids may be arranged in person with our office team, by phone or by email. We simply require the lot number and details of the lots which you wish to bid on and contact phone number / numbers. Our phone bidders will call in advance of your chosen lot / lots and bid on your behalf during the sale.
Telephone bids must be booked by 4pm the day before the sale but can be arranged earlier, we have limited lines and certain lots can be over-subscribed for phone bidding, in such instances we conduct a first come, first served basis and we encourage clients to book well in advance or risk being disappointed.

Storage charges:- Please note that all lots of furniture, garden statues and rugs will only be available for collection strictly by appointment at our premises until 12pm Friday 6th May. After which all items of furniture will be collected by R & D Schofield Removals at a cost of £10 + vat per lot and £1 per day storage thereafter
