1935 Riley 9 Imp, reg. no. BYK 947, chassis no. 6027447, maroon coachwork with burgundy hide upholstery, fitted with pre-selector gearbox. Long-term (60 year) ownership with Dick Cresswell and his late twin brother David.
This very special Riley sports car is believed to be one of only approximately 120 built. It has a 9hp, 1087cc twin-cam four cylinder engine with twin SU carburettors and short wheelbase with very attractive open coachwork with louvred long bonnet, flowing wings and short tail. The combination of these features and limited production numbers made it one of the most desirable small sports cars of the mid-1930s. We have been informed that it was subject to an extensive restoration, which was completed approximately 25 years ago, and its very good general condition would support this. As with all of David Cresswell's cars, it has not seen much use in recent years and will probably require some light recommissioning. It is supplied with a current V5 and a 1960s brown log book, which shows it was owned by Mr Gerald Dick of Winchmore Hill, London, from 1962-1966 and Mr Norman Smith of Chelsworth, Suffolk, from 1966-1969, and that Dick Cresswell bought it in September 1966 (60 years ago). It also has some old MOT certificates. We note that the engine number displayed on the old logbook and on the current V5 (55950) differs from that stamped on the engine timing case (54506), which may indicate that, at some point, the engine has been changed, a common occurrence in old cars. A rare opportunity to own one of the most desirable Riley sports cars of the 1930s, and from long-term enthusiast ownership. (Subject to 12% buyers' premium inclusive of VAT).

Absentee Bidding
For clients unable or not wishing to attend our sale we are happy to accept absentee bids. Absentee bids can either be left in person with our office team, phoned or emailed to us. We simply require lot numbers and descriptions and the maximum bid which you wish to leave. Absentee bids are then transferred to our auction pages and the auctioneer will bid on your behalf. If the lot can be purchased at a lower price than your maximum bid our auctioneers will always endeavour to work in your interest to purchase the lot for you as cheaply as other bids will allow. If the same bid is left by two people on a lot we will precedence to the bidder who leaves the bid first.
We are happy to provide condition reports for online and absentee bidders and to supply additional photographs on any lot. We ask that condition report requests are submitted at least 24 hours prior to the sale. (Whilst every care is taken to give an accurate condition report, we accept no responsibility for any omissions or errors in our reports. It is the buyer’s responsibility to view the lots and satisfy themselves as to their condition.)
Telephone Bidding
We are happy to accept phone bids for our Fine Art and Collectors’ sales. Phone bids may be arranged in person with our office team, by phone or by email. We simply require the lot number and details of the lots which you wish to bid on and contact phone number / numbers. Our phone bidders will call in advance of your chosen lot / lots and bid on your behalf during the sale.
Telephone bids must be booked by 4pm the day before the sale but can be arranged earlier, we have limited lines and certain lots can be over-subscribed for phone bidding, in such instances we conduct a first come, first served basis and we encourage clients to book well in advance or risk being disappointed.

Our Classic Car Sale includes a wonderful selection of vintage and classic cars, totalling half a million pounds, including nine Rileys, a rare 1952 Bentley MKVI Convertible, a very rare 1939 Jaguar SS Convertible, two 1950s Jaguar XKs, 1970 Jaguar E-Type Coupe and a rare 1939 Lagonda LG6 Saloon. There is also a good selection of automobilia including vintage car mascots and badges.
