1921 Talbot - Darracq 16hp V21 open tourer, reg. no. XH5797, chassis no. Type 21 No. 36652
Owned by the vendor's late husband since 1967.
This splendid high quality French vintage open tourer which was made for the English market is based on a 1913 design which was discontinued for the duration of the First World War while the factory engaged in aircraft production and was then re-introduced after the war when the production of motorcars commenced again. The powerful 3 litre four cylinder engine allows a cruising speed of 45 miles an hour and was highly regarded when it was new. This very original example was purchased by the vendor's husband in 1967 from CJ Bendall Ltd of Hitchin, Hertfordshire for £750 (the original bill of sale, original purchase cheque and a photograph of the happy couple with their new purchase are included in the sale.) The car has lovely green and black coachwork with a black buttoned leather upholstered interior with canvas hood all of which have a wonderful patina and appear in very sound condition for their age. It is equipped with good quality CAV electrical fittings, including the headlamps, side lamps and instruments. The late owner used the car frequently at first and then commenced some sympathetic mechanical restoration in the 1970s and early 1980s. It had its last MOT in 1982 and was then taken off the road and stored in an open but dry barn. The engine was turned over from time to time to keep it free as it is today. This delightful 'oily rag' large vintage tourer represents a rare opportunity to obtain a highly original vintage car that will require some restoration and recommissioning that has a wonderful history file including a V5C logbook, old logbooks, bills for work carried out in 1970s and 80s and related ephemera including old photographs. It is also supplied with several boxes of spares and fittings. (Subject to 12% buyers' premium inclusive of VAT).
Rare classics emerge from rural Suffolk barn
Watch Claire and Elton from UK Barnfinds document the extraction of the Talbot and Mercedes from Suffolk.
Two rare classic cars have been uncovered in a rural Suffolk barn, following decades off the road. The 1950’s Mercedes - Benz 220 Type A Convertible and 1921 Talbot - Darracq with a combined age of 175 years are being offered for sale due to the passing of their owner.
The left hand drive Mercedes - Benz was originally purchased by the late owner, whilst he was serving in the British Army in Germany, with the much loved car travelling with him during his military career. It also saw life in Cyprus and the Middle East, before he undertook an epic journey across the continent to bring the car back to blighty.
The 1921 Talbot - Darracq was purchased from C. J. Bendall Ltd in Hitchin in February 1967 at a cost of £750.00, the original purchase receipt and cheque remain with a photograph of the late owner and his wife standing proudly beside their new purchase.
We understand from the late owners family that the cars were last running in the 1980’s and have remained preserved in his barn for the last 4 decades. The cars will be sold as part of our specialist classic cars, vehicle and automobilia auction on Saturday 16th November 2024. The Mercedes is estimated at £30,000 - 40,000 and the Talbot £6,000 - 8,000. For further details or to discuss entering a vehicle or automobilia, please call Lewis on 01206 754754.
