Thomas Gibson Crawford (circa 1813-1857), Grand Tour marble bust of Jane Caroline Armatt (1798-1857),of classical influence with her hair in ringlets and intertwined with flowers , signed verso ' T. Crawford Fecit Rome 1838'. Raised on socle, 66 cm high.
Thomas Gibson Crawford was an American sculptor best known for his sculptures at The United States Capitol building. In 1835 he studied in Rome under Bertel Thorwaldsen and whilst there carried out commissions for tourists including Jane Armatt.
Jane Armatt was a rich American tourist who throughout her Grand Tour of Europe in the 1830s acquired a large amount of art and other objects including plant specimens which she had shipped back to her estate Loudoun in Philadelphia,Pennsylvania where she recreated the European gardens she so admired on her travels and which still stands today. Luckily her letters survive with the Loundoun Papers lodged with the Pennsylvania Historical Society. In one of her Letters to her daughter dated June 28th, 1838 she discusses some of the art she had recently brought home including two busts of her and her husband by Crawford, all done in Rome. She writes" after his return we opened the two boxes containing the busts, we found them safe and unbroken and the likeness very good ". Provenance: being sold by a descendant
