Reeman Dansie is delighted to include a beautiful collection of clothing in relation to the Gillman/Rube family in our forthcoming Specialist Collectors' Sale (11-13 August).
It is rare to receive a consignment of such exquisite late Victorian and early Edwardian clothing with such well-documented and authenticated provenance.
Eighteen lots will go under the hammer, including an 1882 wedding dress (Lot 2500), a 1911 wedding dress (Lot 2501), and a stunning 1911 evening dress by Reville & Rossiter of London, to highlight just a few. The collection also features an array of accessories, including shoes, veils, nightwear and ladies' "combinations".
What makes this collection especially fascinating are the handwritten notes accompanying many of the garments, identifying who wore them and for what occasion. Among them is the inscription accompanying Lot 2502: "Dress I wore at evening reception at Claridge's on our wedding day, 8th February 1911. EG." These personal annotations transform each piece from a beautiful garment into a tangible link with the lives and stories of those who once wore them.
