Lot 1057 - English School, circa 1740, oil on canvas, portrait of Lieut. Charles Le Hardy R.N. (1716-1780), Governor of New York (1755-1757). Estimate: £2500-3500.
Lot 1060 - Attributed to Robert Walker (1607-1658) oil on canvas - portrait of a gentleman named as William Alexander of Needham Market, indistinctly inscribed, 74cm x 62cm, in fine period carved gilt frame with carved orange blossom.
N.B. William Alexander was the son of Rev. John Alexander of Otley, he was an iron monger and was the first member of his family to become a Quaker, in 1657 he was committed to the County Gaol for promulgating the tenets of Quakers, and at the Quarter Sessions fined £5, and re-committed for refusing to pay it, He died in 1681, William's grandson founded the Alexander's Bank in Needham Market, one of the earliest private banks. Although the bank wasn't formally trading until 1744, it is known that the Alexanders were transacting banking business at an earlier period. Estimate: £6000-8000.

Lot 150 in our Fine Art sale on the 9th and 10th of June is a wonderfully evocative collection of private correspondence from the Royal family and includes a special note from our King, His Majesty Charles III.
