An intriguing near contemporary label to the reverse states ‘The Staircase of Old West Quay House, built against the West wall of Southampton, occupied by Madame Maes and Family and her brother Charles Marrett until it was pulled down in order to complete the road along the western shore.

It stood nearly opposite the entrance to the docks. This staircase was sold and shipped to America in the ill-fated 'Titanic', lost after collision with an iceberg'. it has been calculated that the Titanic had 25 staircases, but this new evidence suggests there were 26 onboard!

Also included in our sale are the two portraits which hang above the stairs in the picture (lot 1257Manner of Zophany, late 18th century, pair of oils on canvas - Portraits of a Lady and Gentleman) and various other items which once resided in Old West Quay House, Southampton.
